The City of Kalamazoo has several resources to help assist residents.   Listed below are the most common departments that residents are in contact with:

Community Planning and Development

The Community Planning and Development offices are located at 445 W. Michigan Avenue.   Offices for housing inspections, zoning, and historic preservation are located at Community Plannning and Development.

Housing inspections deals with exterior housing concerns and also interior conditions for rental properties.   All rental properties are required to be inspected on a regular basis.   Inspected rental properties receive a rental certificate when the house meets all requirements.   A list of certified rental properties can be found on the City’s website at: http://www.kalamazoocity.org/RentalRegistration.asp?Sortfield=ParcelAddress.

In addition service request forms can be downloaded at:

A service request form can be filed when there is a violation in the housing code.  The housing code can be found at:
http://www.kalamazoocity.org/docs/HousingCode10-17-2005.pdf.

In addition, the historic district preservation coordinator is located at Community Planning and Development.   The majority of homes in Vine Neighborhood are located in the historic district.  Owning a historic home brings many privileges and responsibilities to the homeowner.    Historic tax credits are available for home repair and rehab projects.   Also, certain regulations also apply to the exterior of the building.   Contact the Historic Preservation Coordinator at 337-8804 or the VINE office at 349-8463 for further information before you begin a project.
